Here's a simple method of comparing mouthpiece gap:

The loneliness of practice

Okay so I'm actually writing this as I'm sitting in my practice room practicing. Wait was that a bit redundit? Anyhow as trumpet players/musicians the one thing that we have to do daily is practice. Those who are not musicians really have no idea just how lonely this can be.

When I resumed playing trumpet after not having played for five years I was fortunate enough that I was able to study with a really, really great player. During one on my lessons I asked why he had a television in his… Continue

FOR THE NEXT 7-8 YEARS WE PLAYED OUR 3-4 NIGHT A WEEK AT NYES AND WE WERE BLESSED WITH MANY OTHER JOBS. AT 52 YEARS OLD I BEGAN TO LEARN THE BUSINESS PART OF MUSIC. I WAS NOW DOING MOST OF THE BOOKINGS AND SCHEDULING FOR EITHER A 2 PIECE (TRUMPET AND ACCORDIAN) OR 3 PIECE (TRUMPET, ACCORDIAN AND DRUMS). IT SEEMED TO ME THAT ONE OF THE BIG PROBLEMS MANY MUSICIANS HAD WAS HOW TO MARKET THEIR PRODUCT OR EVEN REALIZE THEY HAD A PRODUCT. I TRIED TO LOOK AT THE BUSINESS AS I WOULD IF I WERE SELLING WIDGETS. I MADE SURE I AVIOIDED THE "ARTIST" PITFALL. I FOUND THAT MOST MUSICIANS WHO CONSIDERED… Continue

Photo Cropping 101 aka Trouble with profile photos

Hi Everyone!

I know some people have been having problems with the sizing of their main profile photo. I believe if you crop the photo to 183 pixels x 183 pixels it will be "just right" and you shouldn't have any problems with your head or body being "cut off" ... also this is a link to a free cropping tool:

http://www.easycropper.com

If you're still have troubles please feel free to email me your photo directly to: jen@harrelsontrumpets.com and I will crop it for you… Continue

5K

i was a band geek, an art freak and a drama queen in school. i am an active person that enjoys kayaking, hiking, dancing etc. etc. but if you asked me a few years ago if i'd like to run the 5K ... i would laugh and roll my eyes... but... this morning i did just that.

honestly i was really scared. i kept thinking about high school gym class and my short stint in basketball and the phrase "what am i doing here" went through my head a few times...

MY NEXT MAJOR EXPERIENCE CAME ROUGHLY 12 MONTHS LATER. I BEGAN PLAYING WITH A 2 PIECE. THERE WAS ACCORDIAN AND DRUMS. IT WAS AN EVERY SATURDAY AFTERNOON JOB. THEY BOTH GOT PAID AND I OF COUSE DIDN'T. THIS WENT ON TIL MID AUGUST. ONE SATURDAY IN AUGUST I SPOKE WITH THE LEADER (DRUMMER) AND TOLD HIM I WOULD BE CAPABLE OF PLAYING ALL OF THEIR SONGS BY DEC 31ST AND AT THAT TIME I WOULD EXPECT TO START BEING PAID THE SAME AS THEY WERE. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THIS BAR/CLUB HAD 80% REGULAR… Continue

STARTING TO PLAY

I STARTED PLAYING THE TRUMPET VERY LATE IN LIFE. I WAS 50 YEARS OLD AND HAD NEVER PLAYED MUSIC EXCEPT ON THE RADIO. I TOOK SOME LESSONS AND THE MOST MEMORABLE WAS THE FIRST. I WAS SITTING IN THIS MUSIC STORE WITH A BUNCH OF KIDS WAITING TO BE CALLED, A DOOR OPENED AND A TEENAGE BOY LEFT. A MAN CAME OUT OF THE ROOM AND CALLED "HAYDEN", SO I STOOD UP. WELL HE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID"YOU'RE HAYDEN" AND I ANSWERED YES. HE INVITED ME IN TO THE ROOM. THE FIRST THING HE SHOWED ME WAS HOW TO HOLD A… Continue
